Mars promoting more football

Confectionery brand Mars is to give away 100,000 footballs as part of a new nationwide promotion.

The 'MARS Balls Get Britain Playing' campaign will run from April to June this year and follows on from the company's 'Believe' promotion linked to the 2006 World Cup.

Mars says the aim is to 'channel the nation's spirit and encourage the country to get active and play more football', the giveaway being supported with a £7m marketing spend involving tv, press and radio advertising, outdoor poster sites, in-store POS and value deals, plus PR activity.

The promotion will run across single and duo Mars bars, Mars five and nine bar multipacks, Mars Planets, Mars ice cream bars and Mars drinks.

10,000 of the footballs will be given away through on-pack instant wins, 50,000 through trade partnerships and a further 40,000 via other marketing activities. All the competitions feature a 'no purchase necessary' route.

An interactive website - which goes live on 1st April - will allow consumers to enter to win a football on line and learn more about the campaign.

Mars is also sponsoring the Grass Roots Football LIVE event at Birmingham's NEC between 30th May - 1st June.
